The so-called oil seal chain has an oil seal in the middle of the inner and outer chain pieces (at the red circle on the picture), and the lubricating oil is wrapped in the middle to achieve the lubrication state of the chain. If there is no such oil seal, it is called a non-oil seal chain.

The oil seal chain has a longer maintenance cycle and better durability in terms of maintenance and durability. At the same time, the oil seal chain has higher torsion and tensile strength, which is more extensive than the non-oil seal chain. However, in terms of price, the non-oil seal chain is relatively dominant, and the maintenance process is relatively simple.



Taking the oil seal chain as an example, it can be roughly divided into six structures: inner chain piece, outer chain piece, pin, bushing, roller, and oil seal.


In the manufacture of chains, the precision and wear resistance of pins and bushings is a very important part. Usually the chain we are talking about is stretched, mainly from the wear of the pins and bushings.


Don't underestimate the gap between this point. In a 100-section chain, as long as each section is stretched by 0.1mm, the 100 knots can add up to one centimeter. And when the chain begins to wear, its wear rate will rapidly increase, so be careful.


Regarding the pin of the chain, in addition to the high precision of machining, it must also be a positive cylinder to maintain a fixed gap with the bushing and reduce unnecessary wear. In addition, chromium carbide must be plated on the outer layer of the pin to increase stiffness and hardness to reduce wear.



While too hard metal tends to become brittle, the center must be properly heat treated to keep the center flexible.  
How to pick the chain
The first thing to notice is the specification of the chain. Find out which chain models are suitable for your car, such as 428, 520, 525 or 530. Then decide the grade of the chain. The original chain will indicate the appropriate displacement level of each chain. .

The next step is to pick the color. The DID oil seal chain has three colors, which are gold, white gold and iron gray. The non-oil seal chain of DID is available in gold and iron.


How to clean the chain
First of all, we must understand that cleaning and maintenance are not the same thing.


The chain is most afraid of getting stuck and requires a lot of effort to loosen it. If it is loosened, the chain will not run smoothly, the engine's power will be consumed on the rotating chain, and even the chain may fall off. Therefore, the usual cleaning of the chain is particularly important.

Before starting cleaning, be sure to prepare an oil pan under the chain. Do not let the oily chain be in direct contact with the ground, causing environmental pollution. Most friends recommend using kerosene to clean the chain, and the effect is quite good.

If it is a non-oil seal chain, it can be cleaned with kerosene. If it is an oil seal chain, it is not recommended to clean with kerosene. The reason is that kerosene may cause the elasticity of the oil seal to deteriorate, causing the oil seal to accelerate aging, and the lubricating oil in the bushing is thrown out to lose the lubricating effect, which also detracts from the life of the oil seal chain.

In addition, acidic substances can seriously damage the chain and are absolutely prohibited. The recommended practice is to buy the original chain cleaner to spray, so the effect will be better.

When cleaning with a chain cleaner, always remember to run in the opposite direction of the chain to avoid accidents.

Chain to be maintained
According to the relevant information, every 500 kilometers or after rainy days, the oil should be applied to the chain. Then, after every two oils, clean it again.

The main lubrication part of the oil is the oil seal, which makes the oil seal always elastic and the lubricity between the bushing and the rotor.

As for what oil to put on, it is usually recommended to purchase a special chain maintenance oil. The general chain maintenance oil is divided into three types according to the state, dry type, wet type and wax type.
